Dit was nie altyd so nie. Suid-Afrika se eerste teologiese kweekskool was ongetwyfeld chiliasties (pre-millennialisties).

May 17, 2018

May 13, 2018

The Word, the Son of God, is eternal and of the same essence as the other two Persons in the Godhead. At a certain time in history, the Second Person in the Godhead took on human nature (cf. Jn 1:14; Phil 2:5-9) — and yet, He maintained his full deity. It is because of the one-and-only, unique relationship that exists between the Father and the Son, that the Son can reveal the Father: ‘No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him’ (Jn 1:18).

Covenant Theology is widespread in many parts of the world, for example in the Netherlands, South Africa, parts of America, etc. But is Covenant Theology based on covenants inductively found in the Bible? https://faithequip.co.za

The main reason why premillennialism (also called chiliasm) must be believed, is because the Bible teaches it. Today, our focus is on 230 years after the book of Revelation was written, that is, from about 95/96 AD to just before 325 AD. What did well-known believers of that time period believed about the millennium? Why is this important to know? https://faithequip.co.za
September 24, 2018
Does the New Testament give Christians leeway to ‘reinterpret’ the Old Testament? This important question essentially boils down to the following: Will unconditional, as-yet-unfulfilled literal promises that God made in the Old Testament be literally fulfilled — or are these promises fulfilled (or will it yet be) in a non-literal way, that is, allegorically, metaphorically or spiritually?

Marxism/Leninism is alive and well, and yet, given a bit of time, it collapses and dies wherever it goes. It is alive and well in South Africa — and yet, Marxism/Leninism is collapsing and dying in Venezuela, it died in East Germany, etc. How should Marxism/Leninism be described? What are the theological foundations (or lack thereof) of this worldview? What are its fatal flaws? What does the Bible say about government in a fallen world?

Is it possible to identify a sequential order in which unconditional and as-yet-unfulfilled Bible prophecies will be fulfilled? Which prophetic events will be fulfilled before and during the Tribulation Period? Which prophecies will be fulfilled during the 75-day interval shortly after Christ’s return to the earth, and then during the millennium?

When will the judgement described in Matthew 25:31-46 take place? Who will be judged? If the basis for the judgement is whether one provided food, drink and clothing (etc.) to the ‘least of these My brethren’ (Mat 25:40, 45), is salvation then by works? Does Matthew 25:31-46 provide a basis for a ‘social gospel’?

There is a lot more that can be written about The Times of the Gentiles. Many Bible texts speak about conditions in the last days (ex: 1 Tim 4:1-5; 2 Tim 3:1-9). But this is certainly not just doom and gloom. God is love. God is light. He is working. Christians are to be salt and light. One can worship God and grow in grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. God created the heavens and earth; we can discover His handiwork. As we therefore conclude this brief study about the Times of the Gentiles, and specifically about the end of this age, know that the future (and the present!) is about the Lord Jesus Christ (cf. Rev 19:10).

As part of the Lukan version of the Olivet discourse, Jesus said that ‘Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled’ (Luk 21:24). How may the ‘times of the Gentiles’ be described? When and how will it be fulfilled? How is Jerusalem related to the Times of the Gentiles?

The last parable in Matthew 13 is often neglected, sometimes not even considered to be a parable — and yet in this unique parable Jesus instructs scribes to bring forth new and old things concerning the kingdom. Who qualifies to be a scribe? What must be understood? What do the ‘new and old’ refer to in this parable? ‘Jesus said to them, “Have you understood all these things?” They said to Him, “Yes, Lord”. Then He said to them, “Therefore every scribe instructed concerning the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure [things] new and old”’ (Mat 13:51-52, NJKV). https://faithequip.co.za

Who will authorise the mission described in the parable of the dragnet? Given that the transitional statement in Matthew 13:49a is identical to Matthew 13:40b, both of which refer to the end of this age, it seems reasonable and consistent to ascribe the authoritative sending of the angels in Matthew 13:41 and that of 13:49-50 to the Son of Man.

Like a pearl which forms because of an injury in the tender side of an oyster, so too is the first of Christ’s inheritance, the Church, being formed gradually in Christ. At some stage, however, the merchant will reveal the pearl for all to see.

Then Jesus tells this parable: ‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field’ (Mat 13:44; NKJV). https://faithequip.co.za

The parable of the tares of the field (Mat 13:24-30, 36-43) is unique to Matthew. Moreover, it not only received a specific title, but it also is one of only three parables in Matthew 13 that Jesus explained (Mat 13:36-43). That does not mean one should not study and think through this parable. If the Coming One baptises with the Holy Spirit and is gathering wheat into his barn, how then does the field still have tares, why is the chaff not burned up with unquenchable fire (Mat 3:11-12; 11:3; 13:30)? What new and old things does the parable of the tares in the field teach? How does this unique parable contribute to a better understanding of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven (Mat 13:11; cf. 13:1-52)?

In agreement with Blomberg (2012:355), being told so soon after the parable of the sower, ‘the most natural interpretation would link the man who sows the seed first of all with God and then, derivatively, with Jesus and all who preach God’s word’. Jesus started this sowing of the word (see Mk 1:14–15, 38; 2:2) and he is also the one with the authority to put the sickle in (v. 29; cf. Jl 3:13).

If Jesus is the lamp that comes to bring light and revelation, what is the mystery being revealed? Just as a lamp comes not to be placed under a basket or a bed, but to be put on the lampstand, if Israel had accepted Jesus as the Messiah, then the unveiled glory of the King would have become visible for all to see.

Christ clearly distinguishes between two thrones: ‘To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne’ (Rv 3:21; own underlining). During the Inter-Advent Period, Christ is sitting at the right hand of the Father, for a session, but on the Father’s throne (Ps 110:1). Immediately after the Tribulation Period, the Son of man will return to the earth (Mt 24:31), and then he will sit on his glorious Davidic throne (Mt 19:28; 25:31, 34).

Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the apostle Paul wrote, ‘Do not despise prophecies’ (1 Thes 5:20). These days, however, many ‘leaders’ say that studying Bible prophecies diverts attention away from evangelism, Christians should not ‘try to figure out prophecy’ or speculate about how God will fulfil his plans in history. A bias against supernaturalism and predictive prophecy is common. Why then do we study Bible prophecies?

Does a woman stop being a woman when she becomes a believer in Jesus Christ? Is the employee-employer distinction erased when a person becomes a believer in Jesus Christ? If all who belong to Christ are children of Abraham, does this mean that all Abraham’s children belong to Christ? These questions are important when considering identity and specific promises that God has made to certain people. https://faithequip.co.za/theological-identity-theft/

Knowledge of God and his existence is therefore clearly seen, being understood from what God had made (cf. also Ps 19:1-7). Unbelievers are going to be condemned because they have suppressed an actual knowledge of the God of the Bible. https://faithequip.co.za/clearly-seen-being-understood/

The book of Jonah is neither an allegory nor some fantasy. This is a true story about a true prophet (2 Kings 14:23-25) who fled in a ship to Tarshish and who was swallowed by a large fish and vomited out three days and three nights later (Jonah 1:3, 17; 2:10).

The doctrine of the judgement seat (in Greek: the bēma-seat) of Christ straddles not only soteriology (the teaching about salvation), but also ecclesiology (the doctrine of the Church) and eschatology (end times teaching).

During the Millennium, the last Adam must rule the earth in the same realm where the first Adam failed (Gen 1:28; 3:17–19; Ps 8:4–10; Heb 2:5–9). In the same realm where 70 nations once failed, Christ will successfully rule over the elect nation Israel as well as over all the other nations (Isa 9:6–7; 11:1–2; Jer 23:5–8; Dan 7:14, 27; Matt 19:28; Luke 1:32–33; Rev 11:15).

There are many typological connections between the books of Exodus and Revelation. But the same can be said for Joshua and Revelation. Why is this the case? What typological connections exist between these three books? When may these Old Testament types be fulfilled in the New Testament antitypes? We consider various typological connections between Exodus, Joshua and Revelation.

What is God’s plan for the nations? Why has He elected Israel as the chosen nation? How should a ‘nation’ be defined Biblically? How is Satan trying to thwart God’s plan for the nations? These and other questions are discussed in the doctrine of the nations.

• Whatever the relationship between the two testaments is, the meaning of the Old Testament should be discovered by means of the application of the principle of normal, literal interpretation (grammatical-historical method). Its meaning should not be gained primarily from the New Testament (Vlach 2012:24). The New Testament does not reinterpret, change or cancel the meaning of Old Testament texts.

How does the New Testament indicate that prophetic fulfilment of the Old Testament has taken place? This question is not dry, abstract or only of academic interest, because it has an important impact on the doctrine of end times (eschatology).
